Having topped Friday practice, the LCR Honda rider stole a march on his rivals with a blistering 1m 37.752s set midway through Qualifying 2 to hand him provisional pole in the hot conditions at the Spanish circuit.

Despite the likes Marc Marquez and Jorge Lorenzo producing sector split times under Crutchlow’s marker the British rider was unmatched around the final sector to give him the key advantage as he chipped off further time on his final lap to cement his pole position with a new lap record of 1m 37.653s.

Repsol Honda’s Dani Pedrosa was the closest challenger to the Argentina race winner but ended qualifying over a quarter of a second off of Crutchlow as he continues to recover from a wrist injury.

Johann Zarco’s last flying lap saw him bolt up the order in the pole position shootout to secure the final spot on the front row ahead of Ducati’s Lorenzo and defending MotoGP world champion Marquez who will start alongside each other on row two.

Alex Rins won the Suzuki teammate battle by edging Andrea Iannone by 0.003s to take the last place on the second row. MotoGP championship leader Andrea Dovizioso recovered from having to progress through Qualifying 1 to take eighth place ahead of Pramac Ducati’s Danilo Petrucci who completes row three.

Movistar Yamaha’s troubles at Jerez this weekend continued to show as Valentino Rossi and Maverick Vinales could only qualifying 10th and 11th respectively ahead of Pramac Ducati’s Jack Miller who completed the top 12 shootout.
